The purpose and mission of Caroline’s PEACH was inspired by a child named Caroline—affectionately called “Peach”—who bravely battled a DIPG brain tumor. The foundation, P.E.A.C.H. (Philanthropic Endowment Advancing Children’s Health, Inc.), was established to advance pediatric oncology research by funding the most promising pathways toward impactful treatments. One milestone of this mission was the first-ever collaborative clinical trial combining immunotherapy with precision-guided medicine for the treatment of DIPG; it was named in Caroline’s honor: the PEACH Protocol (NCT04837547, clinicaltrials.gov). In another first, a primary researcher supported by Caroline’s PEACH achieved FDA breakthrough status and approval for DFMO, a drug that slows cancer cell growth and improves outcomes for patients in treatment. Today, Caroline’s PEACH continues to build bridges of hope—most recently by supporting efforts at the University of Michigan working to combine viral-vector therapy with these cutting-edge treatments in the hope of advancing treatments even further, increasing potency, accelerating progress, and bringing us closer to the day when saving the lives of children with brain tumors becomes an everyday reality (see figure).
